COPE fulfils a diverse range of social, environmental and economic aims and is able to achieve this through a variety of trading activities particularly aimed at niche markets.
COPE Catering
COPE Catering was the first enterprise component to be established by the company, and has gone from strength to strength over the last 10 years. Based in the heart of the industrial estate, this business produces a wide variety of sandwiches, baguettes, ciabattas, pitas, etc .
Shetland Soap Company Ltd
In November 2002 we opened The Shetland Soap Company Ltd as a trading subsidiary. The factory shop in the town centre manufactures a wide variety of soaps, shower gels, shaving soap, body creams, shampoo, bath fizz and lotions.
Karibuni
In 2003 we converted our Fair Trade shop Karibuni to our new fine-foods
takeaway and deli. Here the public can enjoy a wide variety of home produced hot and cold snacks together with a cup of coffee that is freshly roasted on the premises. The popularity of this central hot food establishment has flourished over the last few years as the fame of the quality of their produce has spread.
The Shetland Coffee Company
The Shetland Coffee Company is another example of establishing an innovative business, providing a new service to the public and where there is no local competition. As with the Soap Company our coffee products are also available online.
Weighing and Packaging Department
It is an ongoing objective of COPE to seek out and form local partnerships with existing businesses, an example of this is our weighing and packaging department that supports a local whole-food shop and provides an ideal structured environment for people with more profound disabilities.
Horticultural Business
Our horticultural business is fast developing into a popular garden centre that specialises in the propagation of native trees and shrubs. We have recently doubled the size of the nursery allowing us to host a wider variety of our horticultural products. Currently we are operating a project composting waste generated from our catering department and from local wholesalers using an innovative industrial composter.
COPE Pet Supplies
The Pet Supplies shop in the centre of of Lerwick’s Commercial St is your first choice stop for all the day to day necessities AND special treats for all pets from dogs to goldfish.
The Shetland Scrap-store
The Shetland Scrap-store and furniture recycling business helps the environment by recycling materials that would otherwise be incinerated or go to land fill. The Scrapstore operates out of a large custom-built unit at Port Business Park Lerwick. Incorporated within here are the shop and a large workshop area where our volunteers and participants assist in the repairing and refurbishment of all the old furniture we are given. This again is a growth market and we are continually being challenged to accommodate a growing number of household and office items that can be recycled.
