Shetland Scrap Store
COPE has been providing basic scrap store facilities to play groups, primary schools, art & craft projects, private individuals and local businesses throughout Shetland for six years.
This well supported initiative has diverted a huge amount of materials, such as plastic containers, fabric off-cuts, yoghurt pots, bubble wrap, egg boxes, jam jars, cardboard tubes etc – from the waste stream and provided a diverse range of resources to the users, saving substantial amounts of money as the purchase of new products and materials becomes unnecessary.
In addition the outstanding success of pilot Furniture Recycling Workshop demonstrated, beyond our wildest expectations, how the general public and business community enthusiastically support our ethos of combining a quality workplace experience for adults with physical and learning disabilities with increased re-use and recycling activity in Shetland.
The Scrapstore has also developed an e-mail, telephone, fax, letter and drop in service for recycling information, advice, wants, swaps, offers of free materials, collection & drop off point for other recycling organisations such as the charity shops, Rotary club, Shetland Amenity Trust etc and one off initiatives such as the Blue Peter appeal, Rags for Oxfam, school books fund raiser event and so on.
